Lawn Mowing Service in Chicago, IL
Even cuts at the right height, trimmed edges and a swept sidewalk, so your lawn looks finished when we pull away.
Lawn mowing done at the height your grass actually wants
Mowing looks like the simplest job in lawn care, which is why it is so often done badly. The two things that matter are height and sharpness. Cool-season grass such as the Kentucky bluegrass and fescue mixes common around Chicago does best at roughly three inches. Cut it much shorter and the roots dry out in July; cut it with a dull blade and the tips tear and turn gray-brown a day later.
Our rule is that no single cut should take more than about a third of the blade off. In the May growth surge, that can mean a lawn that was fine on Monday needs mowing again by the following Monday. If a lawn has been missed for two or three weeks, we bring it down in stages rather than scalping it in one pass.
A Chicago mowing visit also has a lot of edge work. City lots are narrow, so there is more fence line, sidewalk and parkway per square foot of grass than on a suburban lot. The visit is not finished until the trimmer has been around the fence, the porch steps and the base of every tree, and the blower has cleared clippings off the walk.

When it is time to hire a mowing service
- The grass is past four or five inches and the mower now bogs down.
- Edges along the sidewalk and fence have gone ragged or overgrown.
- Seed heads and weeds are standing above the turf, which makes the whole lawn look neglected.
- You are cutting on the weekend and losing your only free day to it.
- A neighbor or a property manager has mentioned the yard. Chicago has rules about tall grass and weeds on private property, and neglected lawns can draw complaints.
- Patches have been scalped or the lawn looks tan after cuts, a sign of a dull blade or too low a setting.
- You are traveling, ill or just short on time, and the lawn cannot wait.
- You want the same person cutting the same way every week instead of a different result each time.
How a mowing visit works
Walk the property
We note gates, the alley side, the parkway strip, dog areas and anything on the lawn that needs to be moved or mowed around.
Set the height and mow
We cut at a height suited to cool-season turf and change the direction of the pattern between visits so the grass does not lean and rut.
Trim and edge
String-trim along fences, steps and trees and edge where the lawn meets the walk, so the cut line is sharp.
Blow it clean
Clippings come off the sidewalk, driveway and patio so the property is left tidy.
What affects the price of lawn mowing
We quote each property because the time on site is what drives the price. These are the main factors.
Lawn size
More turf takes more time. Many Chicago lots are small, but corner lots and double lots take noticeably longer.
Obstacles and trim work
Fences, planters, play sets and tight gates slow the mower and add trimming time.
How tall the grass is
A lawn that has gotten away from you needs a staged first cut and more clearing, so the first visit can cost more than the regular ones.
Visit frequency
A weekly schedule is lighter on each visit than an occasional cut of long grass, and it is better for the lawn.
Why have Lopez Lawn Care Service mow your lawn
Lopez Lawn Care Service is owner-led, and mowing is where the company started about five years ago. Some of the customers who first hired us are still on the schedule.
We keep the visit simple and repeatable: right height, sharp trim lines, clean walks. If something is off, you call the same number every time.
Where we mow
We mow lawns across Chicago's South Side and the rest of the city, and reach out to nearby suburbs including Lansing, Illinois and Hammond, Indiana. If you are not sure we cover your block, call and ask.
Lawn Mowing questions answered
How short should my lawn be cut?
For Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass lawns typical in the Chicago area, about three inches is a good target. Shorter cuts weaken the roots and let weeds in, especially in summer heat.
Do you bag the clippings?
Short clippings from a regularly mowed lawn break down quickly and can stay on the grass. When a lawn is long or wet, clippings can clump. We will confirm with you how clippings are handled when we quote the job.
Can you mow if the grass is wet?
Wet grass clumps, cuts unevenly and can rut the soil. In wet weather a visit is typically moved to the next workable day, and we will tell you if it changes.
What if my lawn is overgrown?
We bring a tall lawn down in stages so it is not scalped in one pass. The first visit may take longer and be priced accordingly.
Do you mow the parkway between the sidewalk and the street?
Yes, we can include the parkway strip in the visit if you want it kept to match the lawn. Just mention it when you ask for a quote.
