Lawn Care in Chicago, IL
Lawn care for Chicago homes: narrow lots, parkway strips, alley-side backyards and a season that runs from April to November.
Lawn care for the way Chicago properties are actually built
Chicago was platted on a grid of narrow lots, and the standard city lot is only about 25 feet wide. That shapes every lawn in the city. A typical property has a short front lawn, a strip of parkway grass between the sidewalk and the curb, a backyard that ends at the alley and a detached garage on the back lot line. There is little room to maneuver and almost no margin for sloppy trimming.
The city's housing stock is a patchwork of the Chicago bungalow, built in the thousands between roughly 1910 and 1940, brick two-flats and frame cottages. Many of these have small, tidy front yards that carry a lot of the home's curb appeal, and owners notice immediately when the grass is shaggy or the edges are ragged.
Lopez Lawn Care Service is based on the Southeast Side of Chicago and works yards across the city's South Side. We mow, trim, clean up and care for lawns on the schedule Chicago's cool-season grass needs, starting with the first cut in April and ending with the last leaf cleanup in November.

Parkway strips
The grass between the sidewalk and the curb is part of the yard in practice. Road salt in winter and foot traffic in summer make it the hardest-working piece of turf on the block.
Alley access
Chicago has an extensive alley network, and many backyards are reached by the alley gate. Planning around that access is part of a Chicago mowing visit.
Heavy tree cover and leaf fall
Mature street trees line many blocks, and the city replanted after losing large numbers of ash trees to the emerald ash borer. Fall leaf load can be heavy on a small lot.
Lake Michigan effect
The lake keeps lakefront neighborhoods cooler in spring and summer than the western edge of the city, which shifts when the grass wakes up and when it slows down.

Lawn care in Chicago: your questions
Do you serve all of Chicago?
We are based on the Southeast Side and work most regularly on the South Side. Call us with your address and we will tell you plainly whether we can serve your block.
How wide is a typical Chicago lawn?
The standard Chicago lot is about 25 feet wide, so front and back lawns are small. A short lawn does not make for a short job, because the fence lines and edges take more time per square foot.
Do you cut the parkway grass?
Yes, if you want it kept up. The parkway between the sidewalk and street is usually the homeowner's to maintain, and we include it when you ask.
When does lawn season start and end in Chicago?
Most lawns get their first cut around mid-April and the last one in late October or early November. Cleanups come at each end of that season.
