Fall Leaf Removal in Chicago, IL
Get the leaves off the lawn before they mat down under the first snow, in one visit or a few, depending on your trees.
Leaves are a lawn problem, not just a tidiness problem
Chicago is a city of big street trees. Silver and sugar maples, oaks, honey locusts and the replacements planted after the ash tree losses all drop their leaves between mid-October and late November. On a small city lot, that is a lot of leaf for very little ground, and it ends up on the lawn, the walk, the parkway and the neighbor's fence line.
Left alone, a layer of wet leaves blocks light and air from the grass. Under snow, it is the same setup that causes snow mold. Cleaning up in the fall protects the turf going into winter and saves you a messy, soggy cleanup in spring.
Trees do not all drop at once. Maples go early, oaks hang on into late November, and a single yard can need more than one visit. We plan around the trees you actually have: one big cleanup at peak fall for some yards, two or three lighter visits for others. The aim is a lawn that goes into winter clear of leaves.

Signs it is time for leaf removal
- Leaves cover more than a thin layer of the lawn and are starting to mat down.
- The walk, driveway or porch is slippery with wet leaves.
- A neighbor's tree or a big street tree dumps leaves on your property every year.
- Leaves are piling up along the fence line, in beds and against the garage.
- Rain is forecast and the leaves are already soggy and heavy.
- You do not have time to rake the whole yard multiple times as the trees drop.
- The first hard frost is near and you want the lawn clear before snow.
How a leaf cleanup is done
Look at the trees and the yard
We see how many trees drop on the property and decide whether one visit or several is needed.
Blow and rake
Leaves are blown off the lawn and walks and raked out of beds and corners into piles.
Bag or haul
Leaves are bagged or moved according to what we agree on the quote, so you are not left with piles at the curb.
Final pass
Hard surfaces are blown clean so the property looks finished when we leave.
What affects the price of leaf removal
The number of leaves and the number of visits drive the quote.
Tree canopy
A yard with two mature maples drops far more than one with a small ornamental tree.
Number of visits
Early-dropping and late-dropping trees can mean two or three visits through the fall.
Wet or dry leaves
Leaves that have been rained on are heavy and slow to move, so the same yard takes longer after a wet week.
Bagging and disposal
Whether leaves are bagged, piled or hauled changes the labor and the cost.
Why choose Lopez Lawn Care Service for fall cleanup
Fall cleanup is the last visit of the season and the one that sets up spring. If we cut your grass all summer, we already know the lawn and where leaves collect, so you get one company from the last mow to the last leaf.
Call early in October to get on the list, because the first hard freeze and the leaf drop come fast. We will quote the yard with no charge for the quote.
Where we do fall cleanups
We offer leaf removal across Chicago and the nearby suburbs we serve. Mature-tree blocks on the South Side bring in more leaves than newer areas with younger plantings, so we plan the number of visits around the trees on your street.
Fall Leaf Cleanup questions answered
When do leaves finish falling in Chicago?
Most trees drop between mid-October and late November, with oaks often holding on the longest. A yard under several species may need visits at different times.
Can I just mow the leaves into the lawn?
A light layer of dry leaves can be mulched in by mowing. A thick or wet layer smothers the grass and should be removed.
Do you clean leaves out of garden beds and along the fence?
Yes. Beds, fence lines and corners are included in a cleanup. Tell us if you have specific areas that fill up.
What about leaves from my neighbor's tree?
The leaves land where they land. We clear the ones that end up on your property, wherever the tree is.
Do I have to bag my own leaves for the city?
Yard waste has to be handled according to city rules. When we quote, we agree who bags and who handles the pickup so there is no confusion.
